The 3 pm wall
Business owners, teachers, parents — everyone knows the moment. Here's why it happens and what to do about it, simply, without another coffee.

Everyone knows it
The morning started fine. Meetings, a training session, messages — everything moving. Then, somewhere between 2:30 and 3:30, your head gets heavy, your thumb opens Instagram instead of the spreadsheet, and a third coffee looks like a great idea.
I coach kids in the afternoon and teach PE in the morning. If I arrive at the pitch at 4 pm after a wall, thirty children feel it instantly. So I had to understand what happens there.
Why it happens
Three things meet at the same hour:
- Your body clock. There's a natural dip in alertness 7–9 hours after waking. It's not weakness, it's design.
- Lunch. A big meal heavy in fast carbs sends blood sugar up — and then down.
- Dehydration. Most people reach 3 pm on one bottle of water at most. Mild tiredness is often just thirst.
Four things that work
- Water before coffee. A big glass of cold water. Give it ten minutes. The "tiredness" often disappears before the coffee would even have kicked in.
- Smaller lunch, more protein. Less bread and white rice, more protein and vegetables. The 3 pm dip gets gentle.
- Two minutes of movement. Stand up, go down the stairs, come back up. It sounds silly until you try it. On the pitch we do it with the kids between drills — "two minutes jumping" — and focus comes back.
- Gentle caffeine, not a bomb. If you still want something: green tea, matcha or a drink with guarana release caffeine gradually, without the crash after a double espresso. For me it's an Indigo sachet in 500 ml of cold water after lunch — cold, fruity, not sweet.
The wall doesn't disappear because you're strong. It disappears because you changed what happened at 12:30.
What doesn't work
Another coffee at 3:30 lowers sleep quality that night, and tomorrow's wall arrives earlier. It's a loop. Breaking it starts with lunch and the water bottle, not with the third cup.
This week's experiment
Five days: a big glass of water at 2:45, two minutes of movement, then decide whether you really need the coffee. Tell me what happened.
